Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly used in many areas such as self-driving cars, speech, or image recognition. By introducing AI to the medical sector, standard care can be supported by new systems for diagnosis and treatment. Examples like medical image analysis, drug discovery, or precision medicine demonstrate possible application areas that benefit from data-driven solutions. However, the required data is currently typically dispersed over various institutions that lack interoperability, which complicates the development of accurate AI applications.

TEAM-X – Trusted Ecosystem of Applied Medical Data eXchange forms the basis for future-oriented health care that is preventive, predictive, personalized and participative. For this purpose, a protected and trustworthy digital data ecosystem is being established based on the GAIA-X infrastructure.
TEAM-X enables European healthcare companies – especially SMEs – to develop data-driven business models, products and services. TEAM-X combines all the necessary competences in a pre-competitive manner in order to achieve the outlined goals and to implement them taking into account the GAIA-X rules and architecture. In the process, TEAM-X also integrates the actual marketers along the two use cases (transsectoral data of care and data of women’s health) in the project. TEAM-X can therefore act as an exemplary solution for all hitherto unused medical data. To achieve this, a forward-looking solution for data management is needed. Consequently, the development of trustworthy data spaces based on the open and networked GAIA-X infrastructure, as envisaged by TEAM-X, is essential.

The “FAU@TEAM-X” sub-project at Friedrich Alexander University (FAU), consisting of the cooperating institutions Institute for Factory Automation and Production Systems (FAPS), Machine Learning and Data Analytics Lab (MaD) and the “Lehrstuhl für Strafrecht, Strafprozessrecht, Wirtschafts- und Medizinstrafrecht” (STR3), is working on numerous work packages as part of the TEAM-X project. Consequently, there are numerous goals in the sub-projects to which FAU contributes. As an overall goal of the sub-project, it can be stated that the FAU is significantly active in both the legal evaluation, the GAIA-X-specific technology modules and the research and development of future-oriented methods for digital medicine. This includes research in federated learning for data privacy and the investigation of barriers for patients to access their personal care and health data.
By placing patients in the center of the implementation of the project and incorporating the Digital Responsibility Goals, TEAM-X is a pioneer project that shows how the future of healthcare can look like nationally and across Europe.
